Learn How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Most of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at fighting back depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Eat an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for elevating your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more you have of it, the happier you will feel. Nuts, along with bettering your mood, can be a super source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

It’s easy to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you feel happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were simply anticipating to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
