Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to avoid them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. A number of foods really do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are great at fighting depression. You need to be sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all helpful for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.

Some grains are truly great for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is actually good for your mood. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
