Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

A lot of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should keep away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this holds true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at beating back depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–work better. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are good if you want to feel happier. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Some grains are truly great for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full too which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. And now you are aware that it can help raise your mood too!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
