Foods That Make You Happy

Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. A number of foods really do elevate your mood when you eat them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you boost your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to battle depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. It’s easy to feel low when you feel famished! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be better. Now you know that applies to your mood as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these tips instead.
