Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are terrific at battling depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you raise your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

If you would like to fight depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you battle your depression.

Some grains are truly great for repelling bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling famished can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
