Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to avoid them. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be super healthy and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at fighting back depression. You should be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try eating a few eggs to feel better!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all helpful for raising your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you battle your depression.

Some grains are really great for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you have a happier mood. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
