How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Many of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we have to keep away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that basically can raise your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you want to be in a better mood. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Grains can be wonderful for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood also!

So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you so you can feel better! Try these suggestions instead!
