Foods That Make You Happy

Most of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we must avoid them. At times, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that, when you eat them, can improve your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at fighting back depression. You must see to it, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the most crucial part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating a couple of eggs to feel better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you would like to be in a better mood. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

Grains can be good for fighting a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can really help to better your mood. Feeling starved can really bring you down! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest them more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier as well!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Go with these suggestions instead!
