How to Boost Your Mood with Food

In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just be sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and feel better!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all good for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your levels of serotonin, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while at the same calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Go with these suggestions instead!
