Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be extremely healthy and good for you. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you improve your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to fight depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3s. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full also which can really help to better your mood. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while at the same loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become a lot healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help improve your mood too!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a couple of of these hints instead.
