Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood
In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is candy or some other junk food, this is very true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to eat. There are some foods that, when you eat them, could improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be surprised to learn, are wonderful at combating depression. You need to see to it, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you improve your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and feel a lot happier!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you wish to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.
Some grains are really excellent for driving away bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. It’s not hard to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were just expecting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!
As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
