Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we must stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be extremely healthy and good for you. There are several foods that really can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are fantastic at battling depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all great for raising your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are really great for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really wonderful for helping boost your happiness levels. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. It’s not hard to feel low when you are starving! These grains can elevate your mood because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. You digest them faster than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

As you can see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
