How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to keep away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to consume. Several foods actually do improve your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Eat an egg and be happy!

Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel better. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.

Some grains are really excellent for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. These grains fill you up better and that can help you with your moods as well. Feeling famished can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. You digest them more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know green tea can help you be happier as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these tips instead.
